Freelance rate calculators by profession

41 calculators covering India's most common freelance professions. Each one models presumptive income tax under section 44ADA, GST, your platform commission and city cost base — then gives you a floor, a recommended rate and a premium rate you can defend in a negotiation.

How to choose the right calculator

Pick the work, not the job title

If you write documentation for developers, the technical writer calculator will benchmark you better than the content writer one, even if your LinkedIn says 'content'. Benchmarks follow the buyer's budget line, not your title.

Use your dominant revenue stream

Multi-skilled freelancers should calculate against whichever service produces most of their income, then apply the same floor across everything. A single floor rate is far easier to defend than three.

Recalculate every year

Indian inflation, tax slab changes and your own skill growth all move the number. A rate set in 2023 and never revisited is, in real terms, a pay cut you gave yourself.

Freelance rate calculators: frequently asked questions

How to pick a calculator, what the benchmark ranges represent, and how tax and GST sit inside the numbers.

Which calculator should I use if I do more than one kind of work?
Use the profession that produces most of your income, then apply the resulting floor rate across every service you sell. One defendable floor is far easier to hold in a negotiation than three separate rate cards, and it stops low-value work from quietly subsidising the rest.
How often are these rate benchmarks updated?
Every benchmark is reviewed at least once a year and after each Union Budget, because the tax slabs, the section 44ADA presumptive limit and the cess all feed the calculation. The last full review date is stamped on each page and the changelog is published on the methodology page.
Do these rates apply to junior freelancers too?
The headline range describes a mid-level freelancer with roughly three to five years of experience. Juniors typically start 30-40% below it and seniors with a proven portfolio price 50-100% above. Each profession page shows all three bands separately for domestic and international clients.
Are the rates before or after tax and GST?
Before GST and before income tax. GST at 18% is added to the invoice and remitted, so it never reaches your take-home. Income tax is modelled inside the calculator using section 44ADA presumptive taxation plus 4% cess, which is why the recommended rate is higher than a naive salary-to-hourly conversion.
Can I use an Indian rate card for international clients?
No — quote international clients against their own market. The same work regularly earns two to three times the domestic figure abroad, and exported services can be zero-rated for GST under a Letter of Undertaking. Every profession page lists the international band separately for that reason.
