Your numbers
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
Tax is modelled with presumptive taxation under section 44ADA (50% of receipts treated as profit) plus 4% cess. GST is shown as an addition to your invoice, not a cost to you.
This estimate assumes you are eligible for section 44ADA. If you are not, your taxable income is actual profit rather than 50% of receipts — switch to “I don't qualify” to see that number.

Why most Indian freelancers under-charge
Three arithmetic errors account for the majority of under-pricing in the Indian freelance market. Each one is fixable in an afternoon.
Dividing salary by 160 hours
A salaried ₹12 lakh does not become ₹625 an hour. Employees are paid for holidays, sick leave, PF and health cover; freelancers fund all of it and bill perhaps 110 hours a month. The honest conversion is closer to double the naive figure.
Treating tax as an afterthought
Income tax, cess and advance-tax timing are not optional. Presumptive taxation under 44ADA softens the blow considerably, but only if the liability was inside your rate from the start rather than discovered in March.
Ignoring who the client is
The same deliverable is worth 2-3x more to a US client than to an Indian agency subcontracting the work. Location of the buyer, not skill level, is the single largest variable in Indian freelance pricing.

Freelance pricing in India: common questions
How do I calculate my freelance hourly rate in India?
Start with the monthly income you want to keep, add your business expenses, add the income tax due on that amount, gross up for any platform commission, then divide by realistic billable hours — usually 100 to 120 a month, not 160. Finally add a 20-30% margin so slow months and unpaid revisions do not push you below break-even.
What is a good hourly rate for a freelancer in India in 2026?
For domestic Indian clients, mid-level freelancers typically charge between ₹300 and ₹3,500 per hour depending on the profession. International clients pay two to three times those figures. AI engineering, cybersecurity and financial consulting sit at the top of the range; general graphic design and virtual assistance at the bottom.
Do freelancers in India have to pay GST?
GST registration becomes mandatory once aggregate annual turnover crosses ₹20 lakh, or ₹10 lakh in special-category states. Services exported to foreign clients are zero-rated: file a Letter of Undertaking and invoice without charging GST, while still counting those receipts toward the threshold.
How are Indian freelancers taxed?
Most freelance professionals use presumptive taxation under section 44ADA, declaring 50% of gross receipts as taxable profit with no requirement to maintain books. Tax is then charged on that profit at New or Old Regime slab rates plus 4% cess, and advance tax is payable in quarterly instalments.
How much more should I charge international clients?
Two to three times your domestic rate is the observed market spread. Set the number from your INR requirement, convert at a rate 3-5% below spot, then add 5-8% to cover payment fees, FX spread and out-of-hours availability.
Is this freelance rate calculator free?
Yes. Every calculator on the site is free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. None of your income or expense inputs are transmitted or stored.
