Salary to freelance rate calculator for India

Leaving a job to freelance? Enter your current salary and benefits to see the hourly rate that keeps the same take-home pay — after Section 44ADA tax, lost benefits and the hours you can't bill.

Who qualifies for Section 44ADA?

Profession: only resident individuals or partnership firms (not LLPs) in a specified profession under section 44AA(1) or notified by the CBDT: Legal, Medical, Engineering, Architectural, Accountancy, Technical consultancy, Interior decoration, Authorised representative, Film artist, Company secretary, Information technology (CBDT Notification S.O. 385(E), 4 May 2001). Many writers, marketers and virtual assistants fall outside this list.

Information technology: notified by the CBDT under section 44AA(1) in Notification S.O. 385(E) of 4 May 2001, and listed as a specified profession by the Income Tax Department. The notification does not define "information technology", so whether your specific work counts (for example design-led or marketing work done with software) is a judgement to confirm with your CA.

Limit: gross receipts up to ₹50 lakh by default, or up to ₹75 lakh when cash receipts are no more than 5% of total receipts.

Effect: 50% of receipts is treated as taxable profit (you may declare more). If you don't qualify, choose "regular books".

How the conversion works

  1. 1. Find your salary take-home

Salary plus bonus, minus new-regime income tax after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. This is the income you want to keep.

  2. 2. Buy back your benefits

Employer PF, insurance and allowances stop when you leave. They are added to your monthly costs.

  3. 3. Add freelance tax

Receipts are solved so that, after Section 44ADA (50% presumptive profit) or actual-profit tax, you still keep the same take-home.

  4. 4. Divide by billable hours

Only hours you can invoice count, minus unpaid weeks. Recommended adds 25% margin, premium 60%.

Salary to freelance rate: frequently asked questions

Common questions from Indian professionals moving from a job to freelancing.

Why can't I just divide my salary by 160 hours?
Salary ÷ hours ignores three things: benefits your employer paid (PF, insurance, leave), the hours you will spend on sales, admin and gaps between projects, and the tax you now pay yourself. With ₹1,00,000/month salary, the naive rate is about ₹671/hr, but the break-even freelance rate is ₹1,366/hr — 2.0× higher.
How does Section 44ADA change the calculation?
If your work is a specified profession under section 44AA(1), 44ADA lets you declare 50% of receipts as taxable profit. That usually lowers tax compared with salary. If you don't qualify, switch to 'regular books' and tax is computed on actual profit.
What is the Section 44ADA receipts limit?
Gross professional receipts up to ₹50 lakh by default. Since FY 2023-24 the limit is ₹75 lakh when cash receipts are no more than 5% of total receipts. Above the applicable limit you must keep regular books.
How many billable hours should I assume?
Most new freelancers bill 80–120 hours a month, not 160–176. The rest goes to pitching, invoicing, learning and gaps between clients.
Which benefits should I include?
Employer PF contribution, gratuity accrual, health and term insurance, meal or internet allowances, and anything else you will now pay for yourself. Paid leave is covered separately by the unpaid weeks setting.
