Your numbers
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
Tax is modelled with presumptive taxation under section 44ADA (50% of receipts treated as profit) plus 4% cess. GST is shown as an addition to your invoice, not a cost to you.
This estimate assumes you are eligible for section 44ADA. If you are not, your taxable income is actual profit rather than 50% of receipts — switch to “I don't qualify” to see that number.

How to set your freelance rate in Ahmedabad
Five steps that turn Ahmedabad's cost base into an hourly number you can put in a proposal.
- Step 1
Set the income you want to keep
Enter the monthly amount you need in hand after tax — rent, living costs, savings and an emergency buffer. The model works backwards from this figure rather than marking up a guessed hourly rate.
- Step 2
Add your business expenses
Include software subscriptions, hardware amortisation, coworking or internet, accounting fees and professional insurance. These are costs of doing business and must sit inside the rate, not outside it.
- Step 3
Enter realistic billable hours
Count only hours a client pays for. Sales calls, proposals, invoicing and admin are unbilled, so most full-time freelancers bill 90–120 hours a month, not 160.
- Step 4
Apply Indian tax and GST
Choose the New or Old regime. Income tax is modelled with presumptive taxation under section 44ADA (50% of gross treated as income) plus 4% cess. Add 18% GST on top if you are registered — GST is collected from the client, not absorbed by you.
- Step 5
Adjust for platform fees and your city
Add the commission your marketplace takes and select your city so the cost base matches local rent and living costs. The result is the hourly rate that actually delivers your target take-home.
Calculation method for freelancers in Ahmedabad
Every number on this page comes out of the eight steps below. They are written as formulas so you can reproduce the result on paper, check it with your accountant, or argue with it. The worked example is generated by the same calculator on this page, using its default inputs: ₹1,00,000 target monthly take-home, ₹18,000 monthly business expenses, 110 billable hours a month, 4 unpaid weeks, New tax regime, no platform fee, Ahmedabad cost index (×0.95).
- 01
Annualise what you need to keep
Annual take-home = target monthly take-home × 12
The model is solved backwards from the money that must remain in your account after tax and after business costs, so this is the anchor for everything that follows.
Worked example: ₹1,00,000 × 12 = ₹12,00,000 a year in hand.
- 02
Annualise your business costs
Annual costs = monthly business expenses × 12
Software, hardware amortisation, coworking or internet, accounting and insurance. These are recovered inside the rate, never billed as an extra afterwards.
Worked example: ₹18,000 × 12 = ₹2,16,000 a year in costs.
- 03
Solve gross receipts for tax
Gross receipts G solve: G − annual costs − tax(taxable(G)) = annual take-home, where taxable income is 50% of gross receipts (section 44ADA presumptive income) and tax() applies the chosen regime's slabs, the section 87A rebate and 4% cess
Tax depends on gross, and gross depends on tax, so the equation is solved iteratively (fixed-point, converging to under ₹1). The section 87A rebate is applied wherever the taxable income qualifies, which is why the tax line can legitimately read zero.
Worked example: New regime: G ≈ ₹14,16,000, of which ₹7,08,000 is taxable income and ₹0 is income tax including cess (effective 0.0% of receipts).
- 04
Gross up for platform commission
Invoiced revenue = gross receipts ÷ (1 − platform fee %)
A marketplace fee is taken off the top of what the client pays, so it has to be divided out rather than added on. A 20% fee needs a 25% higher invoice, not a 20% higher one.
Worked example: Direct clients (0%): invoiced revenue stays at ₹14,16,000. On Fiverr (20%) it becomes ₹17,70,000.
- 05
Convert working time into billable hours
Effective annual hours = billable hours per month × 12 × (52 − unpaid weeks) ÷ 52
Only hours a client pays for count. Weeks you take off, and the unpaid time spent on proposals, invoicing and admin, shrink the divisor and therefore raise the rate.
Worked example: 110 × 12 × (52 − 4) ÷ 52 ≈ 1,218 billable hours a year.
- 06
Apply the city cost index
Break-even rate = (invoiced revenue ÷ effective annual hours) × city multiplier
The multiplier scales your cost base to local rent and living costs against the national baseline. This is the floor: at this rate you hit your target with zero margin for a bad quarter.
Worked example: ₹14,16,000 ÷ 1,218 ≈ ₹1,162/hr, × 0.95 for Ahmedabad ≈ ₹1,104/hr break-even.
- 07
Add the margin bands
Recommended = break-even × 1.25 · Premium = break-even × 1.6 · Day rate = recommended × 8 · Retainer = recommended × (billable hours × 0.6)
The 25% band covers scope creep, late payers and the deals you lose; the 60% band is where specialists with proof of outcomes price. Retainers assume 60% of your monthly hours are committed, in exchange for guaranteed volume.
Worked example: ₹1,104 → recommended ≈ ₹1,380/hr, premium ≈ ₹1,766/hr, day rate ≈ ₹11,040, retainer ≈ ₹91,081/month.
- 08
Layer GST and convert for export
Invoice with GST = rate × 1.18 · USD rate = rate ÷ 88
GST is collected from the client and remitted, so it raises the invoice without changing your take-home. Exported services are zero-rated under an LUT. The USD figure uses a fixed reference rate for comparison with international benchmarks.
Worked example: ₹1,380 → ₹1,628/hr on a GST invoice, or about $16/hr for an overseas client.
Rounding: intermediate values are kept at full precision and only the displayed rate is rounded to the nearest rupee, so recomputing by hand can differ by a few rupees. The gross-receipts solve iterates until it converges to within ₹1.

These bands apply the Ahmedabad index of -5% to national mid-level benchmarks for domestic clients. Freelancers in Ahmedabad invoicing overseas clients should reference the international column on each profession page instead — the city index barely matters when the client is in San Francisco or Berlin.

Where the work comes from in Ahmedabad
- Textiles & manufacturing
- Pharma
- SME digital
Local demand shapes which specialisations command a premium. In Ahmedabad, the clusters above are where budgets are largest and repeat work is most likely — a freelancer who positions against one of them will negotiate from a stronger place than a generalist competing on price.
What you need to earn to live here
A solo freelancer in Ahmedabad needs roughly ₹34,000 a month to cover living costs, plus around ₹5,000 for a coworking desk if you do not work from home. Adding a modest ₹8,000 of software and equipment, the realistic monthly requirement before tax and savings is about ₹47,000.
At 110 billable hours a month, that translates to a break-even of roughly ₹427 per hour before tax — which is why the calculator's recommended rate sits well above it. Break-even is survival; the margin is what funds slow months, equipment and retirement.
Who hires freelancers in Ahmedabad
Rate benchmarks only tell you what the market pays on average. What actually decides your number in Ahmedabad is which of these buyer groups you sell to, because each has a different budget, procurement process and tolerance for negotiation.
- 01
Family-run manufacturing and textile businesses digitising sales and marketing for the first time.
- 02
Pharma companies needing regulated content, packaging and web work.
- 03
Fast-growing SMEs and D2C brands buying Shopify builds, catalogue photography and performance ads.
Business districts and coworking clusters
Most freelance work in Ahmedabad originates in a handful of areas. Being visible in the right local network — coworking spaces, meetups and referral chains — is usually worth more than a lower price.

How rate negotiation works in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad buyers negotiate on principle, not because the budget is missing — and once a price is agreed they pay quickly and rarely re-open it. Quote a whole-project price with a clear deliverable list rather than an hourly rate, since hours feel abstract to owner-operators. Adding a maintenance retainer at the point of sale works unusually well here, because business owners value predictability over cost.
Practical notes for Ahmedabad freelancers
- Some of the lowest metro living costs in India: a below-average rate still yields an above-average margin.
- Decisions are made by the owner, so sales cycles are short — one good meeting can close a project.
- GIFT City clients often deal in foreign currency and pay international-adjacent rates.
Freelance rates in Ahmedabad: frequently asked questions
- What do freelancers charge in Ahmedabad?
- Ahmedabad sits about 5% below the national benchmark, with mid-level domestic rates typically ₹380-₹2,375 per hour. Low living costs mean take-home is often better than the index suggests.
- Do Ahmedabad clients pay on time?
- Generally yes. SME and family businesses negotiate hard upfront but settle invoices quickly once the price is agreed, which makes cash flow more predictable than in metro agency work.
- Should I quote hourly or per project in Ahmedabad?
- Per project. Owner-operators buy outcomes and deliverable lists rather than hours, and fixed pricing protects your margin when you work faster than expected.
- Does living in Ahmedabad mean I can charge more?
- The Ahmedabad index of -5% against the national baseline raises your cost base, so it raises the rate you need to break even — roughly ₹34,000 a month in living costs and ₹15,000 in rent. It does not automatically raise what a client elsewhere will pay, which is why remote and international work is priced independently of your city.
- What does it cost to freelance from Ahmedabad each month?
- Budget about ₹34,000 for living costs including ₹15,000 of 1BHK rent within commuting distance of the main business districts, plus roughly ₹5,000 if you take a coworking desk. Coworking, internet and hardware are business expenses and belong inside the rate, not outside it.
- Does the calculator include income tax and GST?
- "Yes, and you choose how. If you qualify for section 44ADA — the specified professions under section 44AA(1), such as engineering, technical consultancy, legal, medical, accountancy and interior decoration — 50% of gross receipts is treated as taxable income. If you do not qualify, switch the tax treatment to regular books and tax is computed on actual profit (receipts minus expenses) instead. Either way the chosen New or Old regime slabs, the section 87A rebate and 4% health and education cess are applied. GST at 18% is optional and shown on top of the rate, because it is collected from the client and remitted rather than absorbed by you.
- Why does the calculator start from take-home income instead of an hourly rate?
- Marking up a guessed hourly figure hides whether the number covers your actual life and business costs. Starting from the money you need in hand, then adding expenses, unpaid weeks, tax and platform commission, produces a rate you can defend line by line in a negotiation.
- How many billable hours a month should I assume?
- Between 90 and 120 for most full-time freelancers, not 160. Sales calls, proposals, revisions to scope, invoicing and chasing payments are real work that no client pays for, so they belong outside the billable divisor and inside the rate.
- Is the recommended rate the same as my break-even rate?
- No. Break-even is the floor at which you exactly hit your target take-home with zero margin. The recommended rate adds 25% to absorb scope creep, late payment and the proposals you lose, and the premium band adds 60% for specialists who can evidence outcomes.
- Do I need to register for GST as a freelancer in India?
- "Registration becomes mandatory once aggregate turnover crosses ₹20 lakh in a financial year (₹10 lakh in some special-category states), and immediately if you supply through certain platforms. Exported services can be zero-rated by filing a Letter of Undertaking, so you invoice overseas clients without charging 18%.
- Is my data sent anywhere when I use the calculator?
- No. The whole model runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored, and the page works with the network disconnected once it has loaded.

What the model assumes
- Cost-of-living figures assume a single freelancer renting a 1BHK within reasonable commuting distance of the city's main business districts.
- The city multiplier is applied to your cost base, so it changes your break-even rate rather than the rate a client in another city will accept.
- Local rate observations come from freelancers invoicing clients based in that city; remote and international work is priced separately.
- Rent and commute costs are indicative annual averages and move faster than the rest of the model — treat them as a starting point, not a quote.
- Income tax is modelled under section 44ADA presumptive taxation, where 50% of gross professional receipts is treated as taxable income, plus 4% health and education cess.
- Billable hours default to 90–120 per month, not 160: sales, proposals, admin and invoicing are treated as unpaid time.
Full methodology, sampling and review cadence are documented on the methodology page, with dated changes in the editorial changelog.
